Subject: Yom Teruah (Rosh Hashana) Yom Kippur & Sukkot

Shalom Friends,

It has been quite a while since my last letter.  I am now set up once again to be able to communicate.  This past weekend (Thursday, Friday & Saturday) I celebrated Yom Teruah and Shabbat Shuva with much joy.

Yom Teruah is the day of judgment – but it is not “final judgment” because we are given ten days of repentance (the Days of Awe) between (and including) Yom Teruah and Yom Kippur (actually Yom Kippurim).  One hundred blasts are blown on the shofar on Yom Teruah as a wake up call.  It is to tell us that time is short and we need to get our lives in order.

Yom Kippurim is when the books are closed and the judgment has been finalized and we have been found to be pure in the eyes of HaShem (if we have done our part).

…..then comes Sukkot.  During the seven days of Sukkot, we dwell in sukkot (plural for sukkah).  The minimum requirement for dwelling in a sukkah is that all of your meals are eaten in the sukkah.  One may also sleep in the sukkah (weather permitting).  It is at this time that we “dwell” with HaShem (as we did in the wilderness when we left Egypt) and He dwells with us.

I will be celebrating Yom Kippurim here in Connecticut, but I will be celebrating Sukkot in Jerusalem this year.  For those of you who are in the land, I will be at the Mt. Zion.

More to come…..

Kol tov,
Shomeir
